The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has remained in the fore front of higher learning institutions providing quality education in its beautifully refreshing environment, since its establishment.
As part of promoting, perpetuating and preserving this strategic position of achievement as a centre of excellence, a number of projects are on going to expand its infrastructural and academic facilities.
In order to get acquainted with developments on the Project sites, the Vice Chancellor Prof. K. K. Adarkwa, together with Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. W. O. Ellis and other Senior Administrative staff of the University have gone round to inspect these projects. The team visited the Royal Parade Grounds, Paa Joe Stadium, Examination Centre, College of Science, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, KNUST Security Residential Block and the school of Business.
At the Royal Parade ground, work is almost completed and expected to be commissioned anytime soon.
Works at the newly refurbished Paa Joe Stadium of Olympic standard is expected to be completed by March, 2010. It was left with only tartan tracks to be made as well as the installation of Scoreboard. Consar Limited, the contractors told the officials that, the materials needed for its completion would arrive on the site on Friday, 15th of January, 2010. Site Engineer, Mr. Guido Boglietti was therefore boldly presumptuous that the stadium would be handed over to the University by 15th March, 2010.
The V. C. and his team got to the four-storey Examination Centre and offices complex, Rev. Dr. Frank Fugah, Manager of Berock Ventures Company Limited stated that his team would finish as early as possible. Facilities in the building include: 120 spacious offices for lecturers, 10 large Examination halls which could also be used as lecture halls. Each has the capacity 250 people.
Two elevators would be fixed to ease access to the top floors, whilst CCTV would also be installed to enhance security within and outside the building. Essentially, it has been ensured that the entire building is physically-challenged friendly.
At the College of Science, the site Engineer gave an assurance that his company, Consar Construction limited is feverishly working towards the completion of the building complex and would hand it over to the University on the 6th of March, 2010. The Facilities there include: a cafeteria, 11 Experimental Laboratories, 10 Computer Laboratories, 7 Lecture Halls with capacity of 150 students, a lecture theartre (300 students’ capacity), 4 General Offices (Reception), 73 Offices, a Students’ common room, a Meeting room, a Staff Common room, and 2 General store rooms.
The next point of call was College of Agric & Natural Resource where both the main building and external works of their Training centre, were simultaneously being done.
The contractor for the said project is Premier Shelter Limited. They are expected to finish and hand it over by the second week of March, 2010. Facilities include 4 lecture rooms, a library, a conference room, 7 offices, and 8 stores.
The next project, a four-storey Residential Block is of 16 flats for the security personnel is expected to be completed in June, 2010. The building which is the first phase of the resettlement of Security personnel, commenced about six months ago and has reached the roofing stage. The site manager briefing the delegates on behalf of the M/S Stivo Construction Company Limited said “there are no major problems and variations so far.”
At the KNUST school of Business complex, the contracted company, “Sey Construction Company Limited”, declared that, Almost all works have been duly done except the laying of pavement blocks which would be very soon completed. He therefore guaranteed that, the building would be handed over to the school by the middle of February, 2010. The building here is a three-storey with basement and has 4 Computer laboratories, 12 Classrooms, students’ common room, Library, general offices, among others.
At the end of the tour, the Vice Chancellor expressed his satisfaction in the contractors for the progress of works at the various sites.
It is anticipated that these projects would be completed on schedule and put to the desired use, to ease pressure on the existing facilities.
